What is a Superlink / Side Tipper and What Does it Do?

A superlink is a heavy-duty combination consisting of a prime mover and one or more trailers (often side tippers). Side tippers discharge their load laterally, enabling fast and efficient unloading in restricted spaces such as quarries, stockpile areas and tight construction sites.

Typical uses

  • Bulk aggregate deliveries to quarries and construction sites
  • Rapid unloading in narrow or congested unloading bays
  • High-volume earthworks and mine site logistics

Why Study This Course & Get Certified?

  • Operational safety: Prevent trailer rollovers, load shifts and tip-related incidents.
  • Compliance: Understand axle loads, permits and legal route requirements.
  • Employability & fleet value: Certified operators are preferred for high-value haulage contracts.
  • Efficiency: Optimise loading, axle distribution and cycle times for reduced operating costs.

Why choose Ellena?

  • Trainers are experienced heavy-haul drivers, assessors and ex-fleet managers.
  • We combine yard-based technical drills with optional supervised on-road competency runs.
  • We provide employer-ready assessment reports and competency matrices tailored to fleet needs.
  • Flexible scheduling for single operators or multi-vehicle company training.

Training & Re‑training Requirements

Licence: Valid Code 14 heavy vehicle licence required at registration. Copies of the licence must be uploaded with booking.

Physical / medical: Must be fit for heavy vehicle operation — able to perform coupling/uncoupling tasks, climb steps, undertake pre-trip inspections and sit for prolonged driving. Employers may require a medical or medical certificate.

Documentation: South African ID/passport, Code 14 licence copy, completed enrolment form, proof of payment and employer authorisation for company bookings.

Re‑training & renewal: We recommend refresher/re‑validation every 12–24 months for active drivers. Re‑training requirements commonly include a practical reassessment, a short theory refresh and an updated medical if requested by the employer. If a driver’s licence or medical status has changed, re‑enrolment requirements will apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Code 14 really mandatory?
Yes — Code 14 is mandatory for the practical modules due to the complexity and mass of superlink combos. Paperwork is checked prior to training.

Can we train on our own trucks?
Yes — company vehicles may be used if insured and available for training. We’ll work with your transport manager to complete permit and insurance checks.

Do you include permit applications?
We advise and support permit applications and route risk assessments but clients usually submit official permit paperwork through their transport department.

How often should drivers refresh their skills?
We recommend practical refreshers every 12–24 months depending on activity level; high-risk operations should refresh annually.

Will I receive a competency report?
Yes — every trainee receives an accredited certificate plus a detailed competency report summarising strengths, any remedial actions and suitability for specific fleet roles.
